Busy off-season looms for the Mavs
After lifting the NBA title in a convincing fashion last year, the Dallas Mavericks had a mediocre 2011/12 regular season which was finished off by a crushing defeat in the first round of the playoffs. The Mavs were swept by a fitter, stronger and more skilful Oklahoma City Thunder outfit. So, where now for the one-time champions?
The Mavericks are well known throughout the league for having a very experienced roster. Their starting five, consisting of Dirk Nowtizki, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Brendan Haywood and Delonte West, average an age of just over 33. This emphasises the sheer amount of experience the Mavs have in their armoury.
In my opinion, the recent campaign has shown that Dallas can’t keep the current roster if they want to compete for a title again. Indications suggest that a big clear out could be on the way and that the Mavs will have a new starting four around their 7ft German power forward, Dirk Nowitzki.
There are several free-agents in Dallas, including starters Jason Kidd and Delonte West, as well as bench players Jason Terry, Ian Mahinmi, Yi Jianlian and Brian Cardinal. Some of these guys may be providing with a new contract, but I feel many of them we will be in search for a new team.
Dallas may also be heavily involved in a few trades. Shawn Marion and Brendan Haywood are two experienced players who will play well on a consistent basis. Despite being quite old, I feel these both hold value on the trade market, resulting in some good players arriving in Dallas in return.
The guard position is the only position that I have a plan for what Dallas will do. I think that Jason Kidd and Delonte West will both be released, resulting in Deron Williams being acquired as a free-agent from the Nets to partner young Frenchman Roddy Beaubois on the point. Vince Carter will take up the bench role.
Expect a busy off-season in Dallas. Being swept straight after lifting the title definitely suggests that a few changes need to be made. Keep your eyes peeled for a big addition or two!
