Sefton Stars officially announce new signing in Cheshire’s Brandreth
It has been announced that Phil Brandreth, the longest serving player of the Cheshire franchise, has completed his switch to VCARS.co.uk Division 3 side, Sefton Stars.
Brandreth’s decision to move also sees him take over as head coach of Sefton’s under-18’s boys, his first real foray into coaching, but something the forward has wanted to develop outside of playing.
The move away from Cheshire, in what has been Brandreth’s best season so far since first pulling on a jersey at the Northgate in 2003, follows on from Niel Gillard’s decision cross the border and join up with Mold.
Tom Walsh, chairman at the Merseyside club, confirmed exclusively to UKAmericanSportsFans.com, of the move: “Phil has completed his signing over to Sefton Stars, and in his role he will also become head coach of the under-18’s boys squad.
“It was somewhat of a surprise to gain his services, but knowing Phil, he is a player wanting to be out there, getting time on court. Obviously we’re Division 3, but we’re looking towards Division 2, as is Phil, and now we have a major advantage in terms of shooting power.
“We’ve had experiences before with Phil, playing against him in friendlies. He’s a trusted player, and with BBL-level intensity, he can step in, and prove himself; he’s already looking towards Division 2.
“He will fit in well here at Sefton, where we have a good squad, but have needed a certain player, which is what Phil brings. He can shoot, pass, dribble, and is familiar already with the squad.
“I spoke last night to Phil about the ethos of the club, how it is primarily a community club, and we deal with many issues in the local area, which is rife with drug and alcohol abuse.
“I laid it on the line to him and said it’s not about winning, but about getting kids in and through to senior level, and having seen him with some of the kids during summer camps, he will be a great addition, and help add to the legacy of this team along with Mal Casson, who has been a long time fan of Phil’s, and has wanted him back here in some way shape or form.”
Speaking to the Chester Chronicle, Brandreth highlighted how honoured and important it has been to him to turn out for Cheshire in all its incarnations: “I have been involved with this club in its different forms for a long time as a fan and a player and turning out for my hometown team meant a lot to me.”
