Gamble hopes signing can pay off for Riders

As the clock ticks down to the start of the BBL Championship, Leicester Riders have added Great Britain U20 forward Harrison Gamble to their roster as they look to defend their titles.

The 21-year-old arrives from Spain after a year with Sant Josep Girona. Despite only taking up the sport at the age of 16, Gamble has turned out for Woking Blackhawks and Reading Rockets, working his way into the senior team of the latter in EBL.

The arrival of the 6′ 10″ young international now provides Riders head coach Rob Paternostro with more versatility in the front court, with the player possessing strengths at both ends of the floor.

It also reinforces the British backbone of the Riders’ roster with a squad already comprising of Drew Sullivan, Anthony Rowe, Barry Lamble, Jamell Anderson and Conor Washington among other talented players.

“I’m feeling very excited to apart of this new family,” said Gamble.

“They made me feel at home after my first visit. I was contacted by Drew [Sullivan]; just simply asking what my plans were for next season and then three days later, I was in Leicester meeting Coach Rob and a few of the players.”

The fact Gamble is accustomed with a number of players already will be of further benefit, and can allow hopefully for more focus on retaining and expanding Leicester’s trophy cabinet.

“This is very exciting for me, to be around young Brits, developing our games every day, and, with the likes of Drew to lead us, I’m looking forward to it.

“I know Conor [Washington], as we have played on national teams together. I have only seen Jamell [Anderson] play, but these guys being around me will definitely help me on and off the court.

“My goals this year are to develop as an individual on and off the court as a professional athlete. As with every athlete, I want to win every game I play in and win the most silverware possible for the club. With these coaches and players this year, everything is possible.

“I see myself as a smart young player that competes in every second of competition. I can’t wait to play in front of the Leicester fans and witness the support that this club deserves.”

Leicester Riders head coach Rob Paternostro was also pleased to see Gamble arrive in the city.

“I liked what I saw from Gamble when he came for a trial, and I think he can develop into a very solid player,” he said.

“His size is important, but he also has a decent outside game, and three-point shot, which can develop further.

“Importantly he is a young man who wants to improve, and I am sure he can become a better player in the Riders squad.

“Flexibility has been the key for me in building this squad, and I think Gamble will be a good addition for us.”

Paternostro also acknowledged the addition of another talented young home-grown player.
“It’s great also for our programme to be able to add another talented British player.
“We have British talent of all ages on our roster, which we are excited about.”
