EIHL Game Day Summary: Steelers 4 Stingrays 3

The Sheffield Steelers hosted their first game at Ice Sheffield tonight, beating the Hull Stingrays 4-3 in an engrossing Challenge Cup Group B game.

Despite strong support and a vibrant start from the Steelers, it was the Stingrays who drew first blood as Jeremy Tendler lifted the puck into an open net when the Steelers failed to clear their lines on two and a half minutes.

The Steelers though soon picked up where they left off, launching a series of long range efforts before Jonathan Phillips drew his team level. Phillips picked up the puck from a scrum on the right flank before weaving his way inside and finishing expertly to make the score 1-1 at the close of the first period.

The 2nd then started in a somewhat subdued manner, with little to write home about until the impressive Maxime Lacroix gave the Steelers the advantage twenty five minutes in, poking the puck home after a scramble in the goal mouth.
The Stingrays though proved far from beaten, answering through Tendler once again before Stefan Meyer restored the home side’s lead going into the 3rd.

Hull again bit back though, as Eric Campbell tied the game for the 3rd time as his deflected shot found the back of the net. The Steelers however soon stole the lead back, as Aaron Nell sent the puck home with twelve minutes remaining to seal the game.
