Jim Tressel resigns as Ohio State Head Coach

After ten seasons as the Buckeyes’ Head Coach, Jim Tressel has resigned, after coming under pressure following his confirmation that he lied to cover up allegations about some of his players.

Assistant coach Luke Fickel, who was chalked in to take over the team whilst Tressel served a five game ban in 2011, will now become the interim Head Coach.

Tressel had received support throughout the spring meetings from coaches, including Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio, Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne and Ohio State’s Athletic Director Gene Smith. After being asked had his outlook towards Coach Tressel’s position been left untarnished, Smith said, “oh, definitely, no question. I haven’t changed.”

Ohio State has improved during Tressel’s reign, having won 10 or more games in six consecutive seasons, the longest streak in Big Ten history. His winning record was 106-22 and, during his time as head coach, the Buckeyes spent 14 weeks as the number one ranked team.

Tressel has garnered the third most wins by an Ohio State coach with 106. Woody Hayes (205) and John Cooper (111) both beat him but Tressel had a greater winning percentage (.827) than Hayes and Cooper (.761 and .715 respectively).
