Mets in top ‘Geear’
On Friday night, the New York Mets recorded an impressive 8-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mets got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Angel Pagan grounded out to first, allowing David Murphy to score. Similarly, the out of sorts Pirates scored in their first inning courtesy of Jose Tabata. The turning point of the thoroughly entertaining game occurred in the 4th inning where New York racked up five runs to create a lead of six-one as Pagan, Duda, Tejada, Gee and Reyes all scored.
Jose Reyes, the Dominican shortstop, once again produced a master class in batting and fielding – making several pieces of breathtaking fielding. Although Reyes was once again key for the Mets, someone else took the spotlight.
Dillon Gee, the right hand pitcher from Texas, restricted the Pirates to just 1 run on the night and extended his remarkable record to 7-0 when starting, with an ERA of 3.15. Gee was fluent and fiery, recording five strike outs on the night and lasted eight innings before being replaced by Tim Byrdak. Gee, with his excellent performances and consistency this season, has given himself a good chance of being included in the all-star game at Chase Field in Phoenix, along with fellow team mates David Wright and Jose Reyes.
In game two of the four match series, Pittsburgh edged the Mets 3-2 in a tight encounter to tie the series. Both sides battle it out again with an early game on Sunday afternoon at 1.35 ET, where Kevin Correia will pitch against Chris Capuano. Both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Mets are hovering around the .500 mark, so a win for both teams is key.
