Sharks suffer further defeat

BBL Championship – 13th November 2011
Glasgow Rocks 82 – One Health Sharks Sheffield 64

Glasgow Rocks moved themselves into second position behind the Newcastle Eagles in the BBL Championship table thanks to an impressive 82-64 victory over the One Health Sharks Sheffield at Kelvin Hall on Sunday evening.

Both sides came into the contest looking to bounce back from defeats in their previous games and the match started cagily as they traded baskets throughout much of the opening period, but it was the Rocks that held a slender lead at 19-18 at the end of the quarter.

The Rocks started the second quarter the strongest as they bagged six of the opening eight points to lead 25-20.  An Olu Babalola three-point play got the Sharks back to within two at 25-23, but the Rocks broke the game open with a 17-8 burst to take the score out to 42-31 with 2:48 left in the period and they maintained their advantage for the remainder of the half and headed into the locker rooms leading 44-35 at the interval.

In the second half the home side continued to extend their lead as a Mychal Green three-pointer sparked a 10-3 burst to take the score out to 57-40, but the visitors kept themselves in touch with their hosts as five points from Jimmy Langhurst helped the Sharks enjoy a 13-3 tear to close out the third quarter trailing by seven points at 60-53 heading into the final stanza.

In the final quarter the Rocks started strongly once again as a 7-2 burst to start the period took the score out to 67-55.  The Sharks tried desperately to get themselves back into the contest but they could get no closer than nine points at 67-58 with six minutes remaining and the Rocks put the stamp on the victory with a 10-2 burst to take the score out to 80-62 with 2:07 remaining and they held on for the all-important victory.

Mychal Green (pictured) led all scorers in the game with 23 points for the Rocks, while a combination of Babalola and Justin Dobbins led the scoring for the Sharks as they both netted 12 points each.
