Aaron Brooks announces deal with Sacramento Kings
Free-agent point-guard Aaron Brooks has reportedly signed a two-year contract with the Sacramento Kings.
The 27-year-old announced via Twitter on Monday that he would be joining the Kings following a successful season playing for the Guandong Southern Tigers in China where he was named to the All-Star team.
The former first-round pick out of Oregon will face a challenge to be Sacramento’s first-choice point-guard, after Isaiah Thomas’ breakout season last year saw him lead the team in games played and finish second in the squad in player efficiency.
The details of Brooks’ contract were released by SI.com’s Sam Amick on Twitter late Monday night.
Brooks will join new addition James Johnson in the Sacramento roster, following the Toronto Raptors’ decision to trade him in return for a second-round draft pick in 2014.
With the addition of Brooks it is not sure what that will mean for Jimmer Fredette, the No. 10 pick in the 2011 NBA draft.
The plan for this offseason was for Fredette to begin the transition into the lead guard position but with the addition of Brooks he may be seeing a lot more of the bench than first anticipated.
With a loaded backcourt it will be up to coach Keith Smart to ensure the team succeeds while giving them all decent minutes. Although that is not always a possibility, Fredette is focused on the team first.
“It is what it is,” said Fredette after scoring 30 points in a summer league game against the Rockets. “You just go out there and play. Aaron is a really explosive scorer, a guy who can really put the ball in the basket as well.
“It’s all about trying to get the team better, and I’m going to go out and play as hard as I can and try to get as many minutes as I can, and just help the team in any way I can. Whatever is best for the team.”
The Kings now have a full roster as they set their sights on next season and, barring a change of heart from Sacramento General Manager Geoff Petrie, it will be the roster that tips off the 2012/13 season.
