BBL 2013/14 Preview: Sheffield Sharks

Concerted efforts have been made by the Sharks to retain a core of the Trophy-winning side of ’12-’13. Six of that side return for another stint on the South Yorkshire hardwood.

Missing are visionary point guard BJ Holmes, shooting guard Micah Williams and forward Demetrius Jemison. Holmes is possibly the biggest loss, and despite Sharks Coach Atiba Lyons’ recruitment, sadly, point guard Brian Barbour who was brought in has now returned to the States due to family circumstances and the Club are now urgently seeking a replacement.

Jeremie Simmons brings a three point shooting threat and a fine Ohio State University pedigree, whereas Jemison is replaced by a twin threat of German Patrick Horstmann and the Paul Williams-recommended Da’Quan Cook of St Bonaventure.

Of the returnees, Olu Babalola looks rejuvenated since close season ankle surgery and reflected this in some outstanding performances in the London Summer League. Skipper Mike Tuck is the bedrock around which many of the Sharks performances stand or fall and with a 23 point haul in the recent friendly against Manchester Magic, it looks like Tuck has laid down an early marker.

Another player looking to push his game further is Nick Lewis. Fresh from his exploits with GB U20’s gaining promotion to the ‘A’ Division in the European Championships, it will be interesting to see whether his prodigious talent develops even further in his second season in pro-basketball.

A poor start cost the Sharks last year. However, their end of season form was almost Championship-winning material and even a performance that comes remotely close may see more silverware headed their way.
