BBL players of the week – week 10
We publish our players of the week from our writers who got to live games over the last seven days.
Karis Buckingham Jones – Attended MK Lions v Worcester Wolves
Nuno Pesdroso – The huge three-pointer on the buzzer from Pedroso would have been enough on it’s own to make him MK’s player of the week. However that accompanied by his team leading 20pts and his influential all round play in the victory against Wolves, made the Portuguese guard a worthy winner of this
weeks accolade.
OleDJ – Attended Newcastle Eagles v Leicester Riders
Andy Thomson – Mr Consistency came up with the goods once more with a huge double double of 22 points and 11 rebounds lifting his team to the BBL Cup Final. From opening the scoring with a big three to effectively killing off the game with yet another monster 3 point shot with a minute remaining, Andy Thomson was the Eagles leading light on a another celebratory night at Sport Central.
The ex-Mersey power forward so often a thorn in the Eagles side last season has rewarded Fab Flournoy time and time again already this campaign for his dogged pursuit of Thomson this Summer. Andy still has hopes of forcing his way into the GB squad for next year’s Olympics and if he continues in this rich vein of form who knows what’s around the corner for the big man?
Callum Carson – Attended Glasgow Rocks v Newcastle Eagles
Andrew Wedemire – The 25 year old Canadian thoroughly impressed despite a losing effort against league leaders Newcastle Eagles on Sunday. In his first season of pro basketball, Wedemire claimed a career best 22 points, while also notching up his first ever double-double. The 6ft 6in guard went 7 of 9 from inside the arc while nailing all 5 of his free throws and playing the entire 40 minutes. Since the injury to veteran E.J. Harrison, coach Sterling Davis has had to rely more and more on Wedemire, and, so far, he’s stepped up to the plate admirably.
Damian – Attended Worcester Wolves v Mersey Tigers
Tommy Freeman – Seeing as my game report was called ‘The Freeman Show’ I can’t look any futher than @tfreefor3 for my player of the week. With 30 points for the game his shooting from 20 feet dominated the contest. As Mike New said in the commentary from the As Live Heat game on Sky Sports though, you also have to keep Freeman away from the free throw line where possible. The former Bobcat is 41 from 48 from the line after the game in Guildford and took the opportunities the Tigers gave him when he attacked the paint. The shooting guard must also be way up the table for fouls on this season as he expertly gets his body in the way just outside the semi-circle, and has drawn several offensive fouls this term taking more than one for the team.
David Aliu – The forward was immense for the Mersey side and kept coming up with big buckets to keep his team in the fight. But whilst Douse started to find room in the second half, no one was able to provide the level of support needed to bag the W. Aliu scored from all areas registering 27 of his team’s 84 points.
