Cardiff Devils 3 Braehead Clan 4 (After Overtime)
After a double figures win on Saturday night on home ice the Clan headed for Cardiff on Sunday aiming to raise the bar on their road game performances. They did what they set out to do and the Braehead boys bagged their second win of the weekend meaning the team pick up their first regular season road points.
Another fantastic performance on the ice brought with it a second weekend treble from Mike Bayrack and a game winner from defenceman Tim Wedderburn late in the overtime session.
An end to end opening period saw plenty of chances for both sides but no goals to either. The teams made up for it in an incident packed middle period which burst into life just after the midway mark.
At 31.54 Jeff Pierce fired the home side into the lead but shortly after Chris Frank of Devils was ejected on a match penalty for checking from behind on Clan player/coach Drew Bannister. The visitors levelled on a 5 on 3 powerplay with Bayrack on the mark but Devils regained the lead with a shorthanded effort by Max Birbraer at 35.51. Just as Devils came back to full strength Clan made it 2-2 with Bayrack again the scorer at 37.45.
Only 58 seconds into the third period and the Clan number 9 completed a straight hat trick and in a period of few chances it looked as though Bannister’s men would hold on until up popped Ben Davies to tie it all up at 54.32.
Late third period action saw four players binned on roughing calls as things got hot on the ice but into overtime we went with both goaltenders coming up big until a defensive error allowed Wedderburn to shoot home with 31 seconds remaining and give the visitors the extra point.
