Cloutier expecting big things from McKinney

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier has backed new British forward Andy McKinney to have a big impact for Excel Hull Stingrays.

The 20-year-old, born in Hamilton, Ontario, initially signed a two-way deal from English Premier League side Telford Tigers.

He made his debut during the 9-4 victory over Braehead Clan at Hull Arena in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League on October 26.

McKinney, voted Tigers’ player of the month by fans for September and October, impressed Cloutier so much that the Canadian decided to sign him on a full-time contract.

McKinney will be in the line-up when Stingrays take on Coventry Blaze in the Challenge Cup at Hull Arena tomorrow night.

Cloutier said: “You are never sure what you are going to get but I was really impressed with Andy against Braehead.

“He is a physical player, who finishes his checks, and brings a lot of energy to the line-up. He battles and is committed – he is exactly the type of player I like.

“Andy came highly recommended from Tommy Watkins [Telford player-coach], he was willing to make the step up and we feel he can play a big part on the team. He will also add some depth to the line-up.”

Stingrays take on Coventry Blaze at Hull Arena in the Challenge Cup on Saturday November 12 (7pm face-off). Tickets can be purchased by ringing the Hull Arena Box Office on 01482 325252.
