Creon Raftopoulos axed from Heat as takeover imminent
It is news that has rocked the British basketball scene this evening, as it was revealed Surrey Heat’s current owner, Alison Reeve, has agreed to sell to an as-yet unnamed British-based buyer, and head coach Creon Raftopoulos has been told, by the new owners stepping into the fray, that his services will no longer by required.
The BBL were informed of the change of ownership today (Monday), but COO Andy Webb speaking to MVP confirmed that any such deal will need to go through the franchise committee, and as such, remains only a provisional arrangement thus far.
Surrey Heat finished fourth in the 2012-13 BBL Championship, and reached the semi-finals of the BBL Playoffs, through what was a very consistent season for the Heat.
Informal agreements with players that Raftopoulos had cast an eye over for the forthcoming season were believed to be in place, but nothing was signed officially, and with only a few short weeks until the new campaign begins, Heat fans will be anxious to see how matters develop.
UKAmericanSportsFans.com will keep you up-to-date with the latest on this story as we get it, but here are just a few tweets reacting to the news tonight.
Just spoken to Coach Raftopoulos about his exit from the Heat. I feel for him. He’s one of the good guys. Quotes up on @uk_sportsfans later

@markbritball I can’t believe that. Unbelievable. Creon will find something better he deserves it.

The weird thing is I don’t even know the guy, I just know he built one of the most cohesive and together teams in the league. #justice4creon
