EIHL Tweets of the Week: 05/09/13-11/09/13
Welcome to this season’s first edition of UK American Sports Fans EIHL Tweets of the Week! A place where you can get all the low-down on what’s been happening in the Twitter universe, from the informative, to the downright stupid, I’ve got you covered.
And where better to start than the Sheffield fiasco that has been known as #BlackPaintGate.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, THIS is what I’m talking about…
Sheffield, like many hockey teams around this time of year, have re-painted their ice ready for the new season. But did nobody stop and think “Wait a second. We play with black pucks, and we are using black paint…”. Hmmm, obviously not, and Cardiff Devils forward Max Birbraer agrees:
Hey, @steelershockey whoever came up with idea to paint one of the most used spaces on ice jet black should be defiantly fired! @Simmsey ?!
— Max Birbraer (@Birbraer23) September 6, 2013
Although the face of UK hockey David Simms insists it “complies with IIHF Rules” and the colour is “blue”, it has still rocked the EIHL world, and has even made it across the pond on popular blogs such as PuckDaddy. I feel sorry for the goal judges… Staying on the subject of #BlackPaintGate, Belfast defenceman Rob Sandrock poses an interesting question:
If the EIHL doesn’t follow IIHF rules (black ice). How come visors are mandatory? — Rob Sandrock (@robsandrock) September 9, 2013
Great question Sandy, although we will never know the answer… #EIHLproblems It’s a hard life being a hockey player, spending long hours on the road…
It’s going to be a long journey looking at these two ugly mugs for 14 hours @mselbs7 @whitey1o @1agoss #schmeltprobs pic.twitter.com/DeOYzNDUw1 — Ross Venus (@rvenus59) September 8, 2013
I feel your pain Ross, I feel your pain. It’s time to place your bets hockey fans; I think former Stingray Christian Boucher could be on to something here…
Take my word for it, by 2020 Jereme Tendler will: average 100 goals a season, have less than 5 tweets & still be wearing the same shoes!
— Christian Boucher (@Boosh53) September 7, 2013
Anyone got any Odor-Eaters for Jeremy?
British forward Ben O’Connor has been playing the last few seasons in the KHL and announced this on Twitter:
Thats me for another 3 years in Kazakhstan #newcontract #kazakhlife pic.twitter.com/WrwfcyPaQh
— Ben O’Connor (@benoconnor1988) September 11, 2013
Excellent news Ben! Although, I hope they had an English version of your contract, I mean, you could have been signing anything! This next tweet is definitely an ‘Aww’ moment…
Couldn’t have asked for a better ending to our Aussie experience than getting a “Yes” from the beautiful @gemrose11-Frank — Christopher Frank (@Chrisfrank2206) September 9, 2013
I defy anyone to read that and not feel a tug on their heart strings. Congratulations both! From romance to “bromance” now, as Rory Rawlyk (try saying that after a few beers) celebrates his 30th birthday with his Dundee Stars team-mates:
Never had better teammates !! Special group. Nice surprise. pic.twitter.com/RrKVOdilGo — Rory Rawlyk™ (@Rawlly8) September 9, 2013
That’s nice, if a little sickly…. Just kidding! Happy 30th Birthday Rory. Adam Keefe paid a visit to Cardiff this past weekend and it seems he had a warm welcome (as usual):
It’s always nice to stop in the BBT and say hello to my good friends in the stands. Cheerio
— Adam Keefe (@Adam27Keefe) September 8, 2013
I’m sure the Welsh fans will appreciate that tweet Keefer and will give you an even bigger welcome when the Giants visit the tent next…
Speaking of the Big Blue Tent, when they say keep your eyes on the puck at all times, please make sure you do or this happens:

OUCH!! Now that looks painful. Safety first, people! This week former Belfast Giant Mike Hoffman confirmed his retirement from hockey on twitter:
3 pizza eating championships,2 non rostered Stanley cups, 1 viral Christmas video as an Elf and few decent stories I have officially Retired — Mike Hoffman (@PuckHoff) September 6, 2013
Happy retirement Mike, although I will miss you as a dancing Elf *Sighs* British Panther Robert Lachowicz shaved his flow off for charity this week, and some of his fellow team-mates helped to plug the event:
Wondering what @RLachowicz will look like with a shaved head? This should get everyone off their wallets @Nortzy2 pic.twitter.com/mrW8RcR6Jw — Leigh Salters (@LeighSalters) September 6, 2013
And here is Rob after the shave. Was Leigh accurate? I’ll let you decide…
He’s done it! @RLachowicz @TheBHF #BaldLacho pic.twitter.com/d9zggZ1TO2

The boys have risen over £1000 so far for the British Heart Foundation! The JustGiving page is still open if you would like to donate: http://www.justgiving.com/lachoheadshave
And finally, as it was the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, it is only fitting that I finish with Kyle Mariani’s poignant words as he made his way to Hull this week:
As I travel across the pond today to England I am reminded of what happened 12 years ago on September.11th #neverforget 9/11 #UKbound
— Kyle Mariani (@KyleMariani4) September 11, 2013
See you next week for more EIHL Tweets of the Week!
