Flyers hit for 5-1 against Giants
In a gritty hard fought victory over the revived Fife Flyers, the Stena Line Belfast Giants moved to within a point of Challenge Cup Group A leaders Braehead Clan, as well as jumping over Sheffield in the league standings, a point behind leaders Nottingham.
The visiting Flyers, however, are now in a bit of a slump, having lost their last six games in all competitions. Albeit five of those were on the road, where Flyers record is only one win from seven.
Craig Peacock opened Belfast’s scoring after a great forward rush from Greg Stewart. Robby Sandrock followed quickly after to make it 2-0 Giants. The visiting Flyers didn’t give up and increased the pressure on the home team Belfast.
Fife’s Casey Haines pulled Flyers to within one when scoring at early in the middle stanza but this only revitalized the Giants efforts and powerplay goals by Sandrock and Jeff Mason before the end of the second period saw the Giants lead at 4-1.
No real danger for Giants in the third period with Flyers unable to create enough to seriously bother the home defense. One goal was added to the home tally when Daymen Rycroft shot and scored late in the third and Doug Christiansen would be a happy man as his charges skated to the win in both competitions.
Who now face a double hitter in Coventry this weekend and don’t return to Fortress Odyssey Arena till near the end of November.
