GB confirm U20 squad for World Championships

Great Britain Under-20 head coach Joel Poirier has named his final squad for the upcoming World Championships (Division 1A) in Germany.

GB will face Austria, Belarus Norway, Slovenia and hosts Germany in the six-team tournament which runs from 11th to 17th December 2011.

As part of their preparation, GB have challenge games against two EPL sides. Poirier’s side face Telford Tigers on Thursday 24th November (8pm) and Sheffield Steeldogs on Thursday 1st December (8.30pm).

Poirier said: “Over the course of two months, the players attending the camps have shown passion, determination and a strong work ethic and I would like to personally thank all of them for their professionalism.

“We recently had a two-day camp in which we were strongly focusing on systems and special teams.

“This year we are competing in Division 1A and I would suggest the level of teams we will be up against will be, as a whole, greater than any level our under-20s have ever come up against.

“Our ability to compete, both physically and mentally, will be tested to the highest of measures.

“I believe we are well rounded from front to back and with our team focus on defence first and using our speed to take advantage of quick transitions, we will be looking forward to the challenge of shutting down our opposition.”
