Jets strengthen further before season opener
The Coventry Jets have continued to strengthen their offensive line with the addition of Derby Braves right tackle Jon Maisey. The 23 year old student of Advanced Computer Forensic Investigation joins centre Michael Billinghurst as the second signing on the offensive line this week where he will join returning starters Andrew Smith, Kieran McManus and Chris Sear as well as Adam O’Reilly, who took a year out from the sport.
At 6’2” and 17 stone Maisey thought he wouldn’t find a sport suited to him “I’d never played much sport because I was always too big. I found out about the Braves when I enrolled at the University of Derby and as I’d always been interested in American Football I decided to give it a shot.” It paid off for Maisey and in his second season he was nominated as Most Improved Player.
Jets Head Coach Paul Rickhuss is delighted to have added Maisey to the ranks “Jon’s a very versatile and good young lineman, we’ll benefit greatly from his size and athleticism.” Originally from Hertfordshire but now living in Derby, Maisey elaborated upon his playing experience “I have three seasons under my belt at Derby now and I’ve trained at five different positions. I’m comfortable anywhere across the offensive line and can fill in at tight end or on defence.”
“Joining the Jets was a big decision for me, I wasn’t sure if I was fit enough to compete at that level but a season blocking for our backs and for Joe Brammer, and having their trust has encouraged me to step up a gear. I’ve been working very hard on fitness over the winter and think I’m now ready to help solidify the Jets offence and hopefully contribute to winning Division one and promotion back to the top flight.”
