Jets win defensive battle
The Coventry Jets combined their women from the senior team with the older academy girls to play against the Warwick University Wolverines women’s flag team.
The Jets ran out winners 20-0 with Tendai Chieza accounting for 18 of those points. Returning 2 of her 3 Interceptions for Touchdowns. Chieza was voted defensive MVP, with rising Academy star Bethany Varney running her close, racking up double figures in tackles. Defence was the order of the day for the Jets with former GB captain, Lisa Eaton announcing her return with a interception/steal. Tikisha McCook returning from her studies made some key break ups from the safety position.
Offensively the Jets struggled to move the ball though QB, Tikisha McCook found Natalie Parker in the Endzone to convert the first extra point, then Parker converted again on a run from the 10 yard line following a procedural foul. With the introduction in the second half of Academy QB, Tina Nguyen, the offence found some impetus and when Nguyen hooked up with Chieza on a swing pass, Chieza was able to ice the game, turning on the burners and out running the Warwick defence.
Much credit for the Jets’ offensive struggles lies with the much improved Wolverines defence led by Reem Brooks. And although the Wolverines didn’t score they were certainly able to move the ball with QB Rebecca Smith picking out her recievers at will.
Following the game Jets Offensive MVP, Tina Nguyen said “It was a good experience for both teams. The Wolverines showed vast improvement and I look forward to seeing how they get on in their league next year”, Chieza added “The talent on the field was exceptional”, she was particularly keen to praise her younger club mates and team mates for the day, “Our strengths combined made us a force to be reckoned with.”
The Jets organisation have been key in promoting next years women’s league and have offered preseason games to other universities. Any university sides interested in taking up the offer should contact should Head Coach Andrew Gambrill on 07766131598.
