Jordan’s Serial: Tebow To Feature In New Patriot Games

The New England Patriots have not won a Super Bowl in 8 years. A drought considering they were coming off the back of a three in four years run. Sure they’ve come close on a couple of occasions, but for Bill Belichick close just doesn’t cut it. It’s a time of near desperation for the future Hall of Fame coach.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. No one knew just how desperate the head coach of the once most feared team in football really was. This past Tuesday he wore his heart on his sleeve, and poured years of frustration out during an emotional press call.

“Anything we do is what we feel is in the best interest of the team,” Belichick said in his opening remark on the matter.”Tim’s a talented player that’s smart and works hard. We’ll see how it goes.”

The ‘Tim’ he made reference to is the much maligned fourth year journeyman quarterback Tim Tebow. After signing a two year contract the multi-talented player claimed: “It’s such an honour to be a Patriot and play for coach (Bill) Belichick and (offensive coordinator Josh) McDaniels, and learn under (quarterback) Tom (Brady), and be a part of this great franchise and very successful franchise.”

It seems to be a perfect match. The hard line no nonsense coach, taking an honest, hard working everything-to-prove player, under his wing. This is surely as close to a dream pairing you will get since Belichick and…er…Brady?

Hang on, wait. What do you mean Tebow won’t be challenging for the starter position? He’s a blue chip quarterback that will start on many a college team without any question. This must be some mistake. He’s even been given his old number 5 jersey to spark off those memories from high school. What’s that? He can’t have number 15 his pro number because rookie backup QB Ryan Mallett has it. I’m sure Tim will be calling his agent about that one. Any self respecting, bench warming, waterboy should have any number he wants!

I had more of this stuff lined up but I feel I should address the question that has been on most people’s lips since the news broke that Tebow was to become a Patriot.

Why?

If the Patriots were so keen on him why didn’t they snap him up before the 40 days that it took. They clearly have a specific job lined up for him and it isn’t one of quarterback, unless both Brady and Mallett come down with some freak injuries. No, it’s more likely to be tight end or half back, just something different to what he’s been known as in his previous spells at the Denver Broncos and New York Jets. Coach Belichick is a master at keeping his cards close to his chest and this will be no different. He will look to deflect all the Tebowmania as much as possible, or maybe even make good use of it to distract attention away from what the other 52 players on the roster are doing.

It’s a strange decision but at the same time one that makes sense. If there is one coach and one franchise that finds a way to make players where others have failed, or even had the guts to try, it is right here and now with Belichick and New England. Even at this early stage of an NFL career it is make or break time for Tim Tebow. He can either grasp this opportunity with both hands, or let it slip by. It won’t be for the lack of trying on the Patriots part.

Butt-Slap No Joke For Chad

The Tebow deal overshadowed a somewhat bizarre news story regarding the egocentric Chad Johnson.

The star who was last on the books with Miami is now serving 30 days jail time after “playfully slapping his attorney on the backside” violating terms of his probation in a domestic violence case dating back to last August. Johnson had pleaded no contest to allegations of head-butting his former wife, Evelyn Lozada. Had he behaved in a more respectful manner a plea deal for no jail time could have been reached.

Only in Chad’s World could this happen.
