Less than one month to go until Hoops Aid
With less than a month to go as the clock counts down towards Hoops Aid, we here at UKAmericanSportsFans.com want to help support the event and its benefiting charity, Sports Traider, in a final push to pack out the Copper Box on Sunday 15th September.
Lance Haggith set up the national sports charity in 2009, whose aim is to create a level playing field by helping disadvantaged and disabled kids to have access to sports kit, equipment, and sporting opportunities in order to help them get into sport regardless of ability, disability or background.
This is achieved through the running of a number of retail sports stores with able and disabled volunteers selling affordable donated sports kit and equipment. All the money raised in the stores goes towards providing sports opportunities and coaching for disadvantaged and disabled young people in the community local to that store.
After also volunteering for over 30 years, this all soon led to him being awarded the BBC Sports Personality Unsung Hero Award in 2010, and has received other honourable mentions and accolades along the way.
Hoops Aid will be the first charity basketball event that Sports Traider has delivered and is designed specifically to drive the Olympic and Paralympic legacy at grassroots level and to demonstrate how fun, accessible and inclusive sport can be.
Set to be a highly entertaining and interactive, the Hoops Aid fundraising event will feature basketball as the key sport. The plan is for Hoops Aid to take place every two years on the alternate year to Soccer Aid.
What will make Hoops Aid so different from Soccer Aid, is that it will feature disability sport by means of an exhibition wheelchair game involving Battle Back soldiers, truly inspirational athletes facing the Hoops Aid challenge.
It is planned for celebrities of both the sporting and non-sporting world, together with professional basketball players past and present from the National Basketball Association (NBA), the British Basketball League (BBL), Team GB, the GB Paralympics team and the Battle Back soldiers to come together to play basketball and have fun raising money for Sports Traider to continue delivering its highly successful initiative and provide even more opportunities for youngsters who would otherwise not be able to participate.
