Lions snap up Freer
The London Lions have unveiled the latest addition to their 2013/14 BBL roster – American Nick Freer.
The towering 180lbs forward originates from Stevensville, Michigan but has played in basketball leagues around the world.
Freer started his career in the NCAA, representing the Eastern Michigan University in the Mid-American Conference, ahead of transferring to Grand Valley State. During his senior year he helped GVSU to an unbeaten 36 game streak, before eventually losing out in the NCAA Division II quarter-finals. During this spell he averaged 8 points and 4 rebounds.
His next move reads like a movie script. Whilst on holiday in Australia, Freer walked into a Newcastle Hunters training session looking for some game time. After leaving a lasting impression, he was quickly encouraged to put pen to paper and completed the season in formidable fashion by averaging 26 points and 9 rebounds.
Despite only being 27, Freer has an extensive and diverse background in the game. His most recent campaign was spent with German side Leipzig, notching an average of 12 points each game.
With a reputation as an entertainer, fans can expect to see some dazzling displays from the 6’6” American, and he’s confident he won’t disappoint, “I’m excited about this opportunity, I love to have fun on the floor and fans love to see me play, I like to put on a bit of a show but I also am very much about sound fundamental basketball.”
No one is more excited to see the new star pull on the white jersey than Head Coach Vince Macaulay, “I’m delighted to have signed a consummate Pro such as Nick, he has experience at a high level but also is a great team mate, his style is exciting and will make us a very athletic team indeed”.
