NFL Hall of Famer’s nephew commits to Clemson
Recruiting season for National Collegiate Athletic Association teams is in full swing, and Clemson may have pulled off a coup by having Chad Kelly, nephew of Buffalo Bills’ legendary quarterback Jim Kelly, commit.
Kelly, who is rated as high as the fifth best quarterback prospect leaving high school, turned down offers from Alabama, Buffalo, Florida State, Michigan State, Purdue and Syracuse.
“I mainly picked Clemson because of the atmosphere,” the 6’2 205lb Kelly said. “From every coach to all the players and to people in the community, it was perfect for me. I just fell in love with Clemson.”
The four-star quarterback threw 2,159 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior last year at Saint Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Buffalo, New York. He also rushed for over 1,000 yards and for 15 touchdowns.
Kelly also commented on Clemson’s impressive recruitment at the skill positions and on wideout Germone Hopper from Charlotte, North Carolina, saying, “Looking and knowing what great weapons they have brought in is amazing. To the guys last season with what they got and Hopper this year. Hopper is a stud. I am ready to work with him and the others. That played a factor in my decision.”
Clemson have already been busy recruiting, having nine players commit already, including six four-star prospects. But Kelly states that he is ready for the challenge and expects to compete for a place in the starting line up.
Jim Kelly’s determination and competitive spirit seem to have rubbed off on his nephew with the younger Kelly saying, “My expectations are to go in and compete. I am a person that competes and works harder than anyone. I want to be the best I can be.”
