Poirier and Watkins handed new under 20 roles
Joel Poirier has been named as the new coach of GB Under-20s after Peter Russell had to stand down from his position.
Poirier was an eighth-round NHL draft pick for the Washington Capitals in 1993 and had a successful playing career in the UK with Newcastle, Nottingham, Coventry and Slough. The 36-year-old has already worked for GB U20s as an assistant, as well as undertaking a similar role for Coventry Blaze’s English National League side.
“It as an honour and a privilege to be named as head coach of the Great Britain Under-20s,” Poirier said.
“It is unfortunate that Peter has had to resign at such short notice. I understand I have big shoes to fill and will do my best to do so.”
His assistant will be Tom Watkins, who is currently player-coach of EPL club Telford Tigers.
“I have spoken with Tommy and can ensure he is as excited about being involved as I am,” Poirier added.
“I know Tommy well from our playing days and I am looking forward to working with him.”
Russell stands down after leading GB U20s in six World Championships, winning two gold meals, one silver and two bronze medals. The Ayr-born former netminder, who is currently assistant coach at Swindon, won EPL Coach of the Year as head coach of Slough in 2009/10.
“It’s not a decision I want to make but in the current climate I have no choice,” said Russell.
“I have been with the Under-18s and Under-20s for eight years and have been very fortunate to have been involved with some great teams and great people through that time.
“It has been a very successful period and it has been an honour to have coached these teams and players. I have watched these players develop right through into the senior team and develop as people.
“Hopefully one day I can be involved again. I would like to thank Ice Hockey UK and Tommo (Paul Thompson) for believing in me and giving me the opportunities over the last eight years. I wish the new coaching team every success.”
GB head coach, Paul Thompson, added: “I would like to thank Peter for all his hard work. The results of the GB Under-20s over the years he has been in charge have been excellent.
“He is a well respected coach and has been a huge asset to the GB set-up. It is such a shame he has had to stand down.
“The appointment of Joel as coach and Tommy as his assistant are very exciting ones. The pair are great coaches, well respected in the game, and I know the future of GB Under-20s is in safe hands.”
