Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is – 4 October 2013
Last weekend saw the brand new BBL season get under way and, as many of you who read UKAmericanSportsFans.com almost religiously will know, last year I stalked out some of the best odds in the betting markets for British basketball.
Despite this, I didn’t put anything out there last weekend. But you may have heard I pulled off something a little special…
We could debate for an extraordinary long time the rights and wrongs of that small bet; both in regards to what it was the bookmakers were thinking offering those kinds of prices, all the way through to how certain results came to be and what may be to come in the future regarding particular teams.
Some people knew about the bet, some found out after games began and some found out after it came off – I therefore apologise to those who fit into the last two categories.
Countless of you also got in touch with me asking what was the secret to my success. Well, I got news for you, there’s no secret; it’s gambling and it’s a mug’s game (hence why I play it) and I got lucky.
Will the bookies offer me those prices again? I don’t know. Will certain teams suffer the ignominy of suffering such good hidings in the league this week or beyond? Ask me that one Sunday night…
However, I’m back now to see if I, and maybe you, can get some extra pounds from pennies.
I’ll pull together what I think is the best bet of the day, and not only that, so no-one can give me any comeback if it were to go wrong, I’ll back it.
I back it + you back it x win = Everyone happy.
I back it + you back it x lose = Everyone sad – it was your choice to follow what I said and it isn’t guaranteed, nothing ever is.
So please don’t cry to me. I will have lost too. Hopefully though, the top equation happens and we all go off happy!
Now let’s crack on with tonight’s two games which both tip-off at 7:30pm.
Worcester Wolves play host to Leicester Riders in Wolves’ brand new arena, whilst Sheffield Sharks host Plymouth Raiders.
Wolves won’t want to make a fool out of themselves in their snazzy new venue, and whilst their massive victory against Surrey may have pricked the ears up of many, don’t be pulled in. Leicester did the job they needed to over Knights last week as well, so this is a completely different game; one which will show off some real talent and the result is vital for both sides as they intend to stamp some authority at this early stage of the season. A real close affair, and despite it being Worcester’s opening home game on a new court, I do feel Riders will be pumped and fully aware of what lies ahead.
Sheffield Sharks entertain the travelling Raiders who suffered defeat at home to London Lions last Sunday. Sharks are 2-0 so far and I fully expect them to keep the ball rolling as they seem to have recruited well and gelled together in their preparations. I have my reservations still about it being an inherited side that new Raiders coach Jay Marriott has at his disposal, and despite the slight changes I can see a comfortable Sharks victory.
Therefore (and this is the important) I’m plumping for TWO bets tonight – however one covers the other, in the hope that you will of course win, due to the nature of the Wolves-Riders game.
With WILLIAM HILL (Basketball->British BBL) – take the option of Sheffield Sharks to win with the alternative handicap of -12.5pts at 7/4. Yes, really. I do think that Sharks can have a couple of big quarters tonight, and do enough to keep Raiders at arms length, so that handicap has value to it.
Then select from the other game…Leicester to win by 1-3 pts (17/2) and 4-6pts (6/1).
It will be a tight ol’ four quarters, but Leicester will no doubt see this as their first ‘real’ fixture this season, and will be firing on all cylinders, however Wolves may just use the occasion to fight for a first home win on new ground. Of course, what each team has in terms of ability cannot be forgotten; which is why I think experience may just come into play.
I’ve doubled these together.
Sharks (-12.5pts) and Riders win 1-3pts = 25.12/1
Sharks (-12.5pts) and Riders win 4-6pts = 18.25/1
Last of the big spenders with a £1 on each double; fingers crossed one or the other comes in, otherwise it’s a £2 loss! If one does come off, expect to see the method in my madness over the rest of the weekend…
