Sheffield Steelers release Cory Pecker
The Sheffield Steelers confirmed this morning that they have released forward Cory Pecker.
The 31-year old had made a less than impressive start to his career with the Steelers, scoring just once in 8 games. Head Coach Ryan Finnerty told Pecker of his decision after Sunday’s disappointing home defeat to the Coventry Blaze.
The move didn’t come as much of a surprise after Finnerty’s less than veiled post-game comments had highlighted his displeasure with Pecker’s performance and in particular his game misconduct for butt ending towards the end of the game against Coventry.
However it would appear that the decision was also made because of the former Calgary Flames’ draft pick’s apparent inability to adjust to the EIHL’s North American style of play. Pecker had spent the previous 5 years playing in Europe and it had been expected that he would be leading the scoring for the Steelers this season.
“It’s unfortunate when a guy has to leave” said Ryan Finnerty, via the club’s website. “We had high hopes for Cory but unfortunately things haven’t worked out. We wish Cory well (but) the club can’t stand still. This is a winning organisation. I hope this move will be the only one I have to make this season. I won’t and can’t accept performances like the one we saw on Sunday”
The club is looking for a replacement and now has two import spots available. In the meantime Lee Esders will take Pecker’s spot on the top lines.
