The Surrey Heat travelled down to the Plymouth Pavilions on Sunday to take on the unbeaten UCP Marjon Plymouth Raiders and came away with a surprise 95-78 victory.

The win for Coach Raftopoulos’ side was their sixth of the season and helps them stay right on the heels of league leaders, the Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders, as well as those of last seasons quadruple winners, the Newcastle Eagles.

The game started with the home side showing their intent from the tip, opening the game with a 6-0 run, a lead which was quickly erased by Heat veterans, Julian Joseph (six points, four rebounds) and Martelle McLemore. However, the Raiders continued to apply pressure and with the visitors containing the home side and keeping the score manageable, a Colin O’Reilly (20 points, 10 rebounds) three pointer pushed the lead up to nine which the Raiders held at the end of one, 23-14.

Into the second period and with the Raiders finding offense throughout their team, the Heat’s Frank Holmes (20 points, six rebounds) was the fire fighter, scoring nine points in the quarter and helping the Heat keep the score close. With less than a minute to go in the game, forward, Samuel Cricelli (18 points) racked up a quick four points and steal to cut the Raiders lead to just two points heading into the half at 37-35.

The third period started brightly for Coach Love’s side and using seven quick points from O’Reilly, the Raiders were able to push their lead out to 50-43. But McLemore’s seven points of his own helped the Heat take the lead midway through the quarter at 64-57, as they headed into the final period.

One final push by the Raiders to reclaim the lead fizzled out with 2:01 remaining as the Heat ended the game on a 15-4 run, taking the road victory 95-78 and moving to a 6-1 record.

Game MVP:

The Heat’s Martelle McLemore’s 23 points and 11 rebounds were a team high and it was his offensive work that helped his side record their first win in Plymouth since 14/02/2009 (97-76 win).
