The Basketball Diaries – Tuesday 29 November
Next year’s Olympic Tournament may not be the only boost that basketball in the capital receives next year. The latest word from EBL club, London Leopards is that they have submitted an application to enter the BBL for the 2012/13 season. With unconfirmed reports of Manchester and Birmingham franchises also set to join the party it all adds up to a massive shot in the arm for the League. Exciting times!
Strange but True
Newcastle Eagles Chief, Fab Flournoy, was becoming increasingly concerned at the poor shooting of his usually reliable backcourt in the first half of recent home games at Sport Central. So much so that he was convinced the basket must be too high at that end of the court. Laughed off by Assistant Dave Forrester and the rest of the team at Sport Central, Fab continued to have doubts until he finally insisted on a measurement. The tale of the tape was a sorry story as the basket was found to be 7cm out. With the basket now adjusted, perhaps this might partly explain the Eagles big numbers in Friday’s first half against Plymouth. It could only happen in the BBL!
GB Captain Remains on Home Shores
The word on the street in the BBL is that GB Captain, Drew Sullivan, is set to see out the season in Leicester. A press conference is set for Thursday with club officials and sponsors in attendance when the news Riders fans have been waiting for is set to be announced. It’s a major coup for the Leicester club who look a truly formidable outfit and are surely set to challenge for honours this season.
Merry Christmas From Across the Pond
Great news for basketball fans around the world as the NBA has announced that the players and officials have tentatively agreed a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. If the deal is approved then a shortened 66-game season will begin with a marquee triple header on Christmas Day. Dallas Mavericks will travel to Miami Heat for a rematch of last season’s Championship series, Boston Celtics go to New York to take on the Knicks at Madison Square Garden and Chicago Bulls will face the Lakers in Los Angeles. The best present a basketball fan could ask for!
