The wait continues…
Matt Newby and his band of merry green Division 1 men will have to wait until Sunday to start their 2011/12 campaign, when they host Warrington Wolves in the National Cup – the broken baskets at their Leeds Metropolitan University home venue have only just been fixed.
So whilst the long wait for the new look Leeds Carnegie Division 1 team to make their first competitive appearance of the season continues, let us fulfil our craving for all things green by casting a glance towards the other facets of the Carnegie brand.
The Division 3 edition of Carnegie men – officially known as Leeds Carnegie II – enjoyed a winning start to their season with an impressive 84-61 victory over Sefton Stars on Saturday. Former Sheffield Shark junior Ben Cepulis top scored for the II’s with 24 points and he was deputised by Oliver Hylands and Ben Thomas who added 18 and 11 points respectively.
Taking another step down the Carnegie ladder their first ever U18 team won their inaugural game in dominant fashion, running out 111-27 victors against Scarborough Seahawks. Not to be outdone, the U16 women attempted to make up for forfeiting their opening game by beating Bury Blue Devils 68-59. However, a 32-107 loss ensured their male counterparts – who are under the tutelage of former Carnegie Division 1 player Andrew Langford – did not enjoy their opening weekend.
Another rung down; the U14 boys overcame county rivals York Eagles (not to be confused with York Vikings) 107-38 in coach Alex Atkinson’s first game in charge.
The Division 1 women’s team, who finished pre-season with an encouraging 94-40 win over Worcester, start their season against Sunderland City Predators in the National Cup on October 16th.
