Three ways the Lakers can still make the Playoffs

To say the Lakers’ season so far has been eventful would be an understatement. After acquiring arguably the best starting line-up in the NBA, with the signing of two-time MVP Steve Nash and six-time All-Star, Dwight Howard, the Lakers were supposed to win it all, weren’t they?

If the Lakers want to make the playoffs this season, then there are three viable options to improve their chances of doing so.

STRENGTH FROM WITHIN

The Lakers must strengthen their bench. Considering their limited cap space, the best way to make changes is via free agency. Ex-Laker Derek Fisher is now a free agent, and would be a solid backup point guard behind Steve Nash, resulting in greater reliability and punch from the Lakers’ bench. Former All-Star Kenyon Martin is another available commodity, offering a scoring threat from the bench and providing some much needed depth at the small forward position. Obtaining both these players would not only fill the talent gap on the bench, but also bestow veteran leadership which is so often vital in the playoffs.

PUT THE “POWER” INTO POWER FORWARD

A boost in athleticism at the power forward position is required. Pau Gasol does not help Mike D’Antoni’s offense, he actually slows it down. The Spaniard’s post game is his bread and butter, he cannot abuse teams in the open court, which is a staple ingredient in this Lakers’ offense. Atlanta Hawks’ power forward Josh Smith would be the perfect fit for the Lakers’ fast paced game. He may be shorter and lack Gasol’s rebounding skills, but D’Antoni’s teams have thrived with a smaller line-up. Smith harnesses elite athleticism and ball handling skills, rare for a player his size. Smith is also shooting a career high percentage from 3 point range, connecting on 36.5 % of his shots from deep. This long range threat would improve the Lakers’ spacing and help get off those quick shots which D’Antoni adores. The 2005 Slam Dunk Champion also averages more blocks than Gasol per game, and is faster on his feet. When combined with Dwight Howard, opposing point guards blowing past Steve Nash would struggle to get easy shots at the rim. The addition of Josh Smith would result in a younger, more athletic and explosive style which fits perfectly with D’Antoni’s system.

WRAP UP – PREFERABLY IN COTTON WOOL

Good health is the final key improvement to ensure the playoffs are within reach. Injuries are an aspect of the game players and fans fear the most. This aging squad have suffered their fair share of injuries, however, Dwight Howard has yet again fallen victim to health issues. Another speedy return to the starting line-up for Howard is crucial to fulfil the Lakers’ playoff hopes.

If the Lakers implement these changes, and remain in good health, then the Lake Show can make the playoffs, and then the rest, as they say, is up to Kobe.
