War, what is it good for?
The War of the Roses continues on Friday 13 May, when the York Centurions ‘welcome’ the Lancaster Bombers to compete in a varsity grudge match. In typical student fashion though, this isn’t war, it’s good fun, as a recent tweet from the Centurions offered the Bombers a place to stay for the night. Unless it’s a cunning plan that the Bombers are being lured in to, but that probably depends on how good spirited the Centurions are feeling after the game.
But make no mistake, things are very serious when these two BUAFL teams take to the field against each other. Last time they met in March this year, it ended in the rather unusual scoreline of 3-2. Defences were on top, and the only response Lancaster could put up to York’s field goal, was a safety. So The Bombers will be looking to avenge that defeat when the two meet in ten days time.
The Centurions were unfancied going in to the last game, and the reputation of the Lancaster side preceded them. In a previous game in February 2010, the Lancaster university side had beaten the Centurions 14-0 on York’s home turf. That was folllowed by another win for the Bombers in the corresponding fixture last May, when they scored 22 points to the Centurion’s 6. So when the York university side took the spoils in March, it showed a marked improvement in their own performance, and sets up the varsity match nicely for next week.
