Week 15 review
It was a week of surprises in the National Football League; The Green Bay Packers lost to the Kyle Orton led Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead to end a run of 19 consecutive wins and giving the Packers their first loss on the season. Minutes before another streak had ended as the winless Indianapolis Colts defeated division rival Tennessee Titans.
Game of the Week – Detroit Lions 28-27 Oakland Raiders
It was the battle of two high power offence’s, and very little defence in Oakland as the wildcard hunting Detroit Lions travelled to the west coast to take on the AFC West challenging Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders were up 27-21 late in the fourth quarter before QB Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson took over. Stafford threw for 391 yards and 4 TD’s, including a 98 yard drive and finding ‘Megatron’ in the endzone on a post route with just 39 seconds remaining on the clock. Johnson had a huge day catching 9 balls for 214 yards and 2 TD’s.
Oakland then drove in the remaining seconds to set up at 65 yard field goal attempt for veteran kicker Sebastian Janokowski but the kick was blocked at Detroit took the victory.
Coach of the Week – Romeo Crennel (Kansas City Chiefs)
Just days after the firing of former Head Coach Todd Haley, The KC Chiefs welcomed the undefeated Green Bay Packers to town. Crennel did an excellent job of game planning for a Packer offence that had torched everyone they had faced so far.
Crennel’s defence gave up just 14 hard earned points to Aaron Rodgers who completed less than 50% of his passes for 236 yards and a TD, whilst running for another TD with two minutes remaining.
All credit to Crennel for getting his team ready to play, and for knocking off the Super Bowl Champions.
Offensive Player of the Week – Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints)
Drew Brees continued on his way to Dan Marino’s yardage record as he threw for 417 yards and 5 TD’s with a completion percentage of 80% in New Orleans’ 42-20 win over the NFC North whipping boy Minnesota Vikings.
Brees spread the ball around his extremely talented offensive weapons. Lance Moore was his favourite target, catching 2 Touchdowns in a 91 yard performance. The Saints look like Green Bay’s biggest rival in the NFC.
Defensive Player of the Week – Jason Babin (Philadelphia Eagles)
Aldon Smith of the San Francisco 49ers gets an honourable mention for his Monday night performance, but Philadelphia’s defensive end Jason Babin gets the nod on D this week. Jason Babin recorded his second straight 3 sack game in Philadelphia’s 45-19 drubbing of the New York Jets.
Babin came into the game second in the league in Sacks behind Jared Allen but overtook his Vikings counterpart to lead the league with 18.0 sacks going into the final two weeks.
Disappointment of the Week – New York Giants losing to the Washington Redskins 23-10 at home
New York looked to keep up with division rivals Dallas by collecting a win against the Washington Redskins. Things looked good early as Eli Manning made a perfect throw to star wideout Hakeem Nicks, however he dropped the easy ball and that began New York’s bad day at the office.
Eli Manning went on to throw 3 Interceptions as Tom Coughlin’s men were unable to put anything together, until a late touchdown made the score respectable.
Other Thoughts
- Reggie Bush is starting to live up to his hype in Miami, the No.2 Overall Draft Pick in the 2006 draft carried the ball on 25 carries for 203 yards and a TD in Miami’s 30-23 win over the struggling Buffalo Bills.
- LeSean McCoy is something special, he broke the Eagles franchise record for Rushing TD’s as he ran for 3 of them and 102 yards in Philadelphia’s big home win against the New York Jets.
- Andy Dalton deserves the Rookie of the Year Award, he has turned the Cincinnati Bengals, with the help of AJ Green into a very good team, watch out if they make the playoffs.
- Chicago need to ring up Donovan McNabb if they want to make the playoffs. The Bears offence is abysmal right now, and they’ve got to take a chance on a QB to keep their season alive.
- Patrick Peterson is a better returner than Devin Hester, shame we will never see him break any records, he is also a very good corner.
