Week 16 review
Another week down in the NFL, and several teams’ playoff dreams went out the window, including my beloved Philadelphia Eagles. Record were broken by the young (Cam Newton) and the old (Well, Drew Brees is older). Here is my breakdown of week 16 in the NFL.
Game of the Week
Minnesota Vikings 33-26 Washington Redskins
Am I for real, two non-playoff contenders getting the game of the week honours in Week 16? The answer to that is yes as this was the most exciting game of the week.
The unlikely hero was Joe Webb, who replaced Christian Ponder who suffered a Concussion and threw 5 passes, 4 completed and 2 touchdowns for 86 yards. He also ran for a touchdown. Washington Rookie Running Back Evan Royster ran for 132 yards on debut and was unlucky to be on the losing side.
Unfortunately, this game between two out of contention teams could have cost Adrian Peterson. The All-Star Running Back was tackled in the 3rd quarter and his leg seemed to snap. He suffered ACL and MCL tears in his leg, which could cost him the whole of next season.
Coach of the Week
Sean Payton – New Orleans Saints
Now, the Atlanta Falcons are not a bad team, but Sean Payton’s outstanding offence put up 45 points on Atlanta, with Quarterback Drew Brees throwing for 307 Yards and 4 Touchdowns. He also broke the single season record for Passing Yardage, help by Hall Of Famer Dan Marino.
It was not just the passing game that was working, the New Orleans Saints running backs combined for over 150 yards on the ground, a thoroughly destructive offence that rivals the World Champion Green Bay Packers.
Offensive Player of the Week
Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers
Surely I need to go with the record breaking Drew Brees for a second consecutive week. Nope, I’ve gone with the 23/29, 283 yard, 5 Touchdown performance by the soon to be NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers was on full form, hitting Jordy Nelson twice, James Jones twice, JerMichael Finley for Touchdowns. (Jordy Nelson cost me my Fantasy Championship.)
I can’t wait until the Green Bay Packers go up against the New Orleans Saints, It could be game of the Century material.
Defensive Player of the Week
The Buffalo Bills
I know, I know, they aren’t an individual, but after a horrid run of performances, and facing the NFL Golden Boy Tim Tebow, the Bills should down Tebow’s running threat and forced him to throw with horrible consequences.
The Bills picked of Tebow 4 times, taking two back for Touchdowns in the 40-14 win. It is doubtful either team will make the playoffs, although the AFC West is still pretty much anyones.
Disappointment of the Week
Mark Sanchez
This guy is an NFL Quarterback in the same way that Andy Reid is underweight. He has an average arm, poor decision making skills and just looks like a fish out of water when he drops back. He has dropped clangers in back to back weeks, fumbling the ball on the goal-line as New York were just about to get them within a score.
New York Jets are a good team, they just need a Quarterback, (and a right tackle.)
Other Thoughts
- The Dream Team is finally showing up, now 7-8, their defence has been dominant the last 3 weeks, I am certain all playoff teams breathed a sigh of relief as they were knocked out of playoff contention.
- Cam Newton breaks Peyton Manning’s rookie yardage record, but I still do not buy the hype.
- It’s like Indianapolis does not want Andrew Luck, where will he land?
- The Rams are awful, as always, reports suggest that team will be blown up in the offseason, I believe that’s a bit harsh, blowing them up
- Yes I am bitter as an Eagles Fan.
