Wright remains a Met in record-breaking deal
The New York Mets have started to lay key foundations for their 2013 campaign after securing the long-term future of their third baseman, David Wright.
Wright is arguably the most destructive batsman in the National League and this is reflected in his deal worth a reported $138 million over eight years. This is the biggest in the Mets’ franchise history.
He is one of a select few in the MLB that I will go out of my way to watch him play. His fielding skills are phenomenal, regularly completing plays that you have to watch again to see just how he pulled it off. Averaging over .300 with the bat in his career shows his high levels of consistency, something he showed last season with a big hitting streak.
With sport in America now being a massive business, loyalty from players can be hard to find. However, Wright was a big Mets fan as a kid and was drafted by the team. To start and finish your career with the same team is an admirable achievement and David is highly likely to do this.
After signing the contract, the six-time All-Star said: “I am here today to promise you I am going to give everything I have to bring a championship back to Queens. There are a lot of good times to come”.
The other key Mets player in contract talks is R.A Dickey, the experienced pitcher who had a huge season in 2012, racking up 20 wins. With lots of teams in hot pursuit for the knuckleballer’s signature, perhaps a trade will be the best move for the Mets. It will be crucial for them to think well and hard about a trade and get someone to New York who is going to make a difference.
Sandy Alderson has done remarkably well to keep David Wright in the blue and orange of the New York Mets. Expect some more trade movement from the Mets as they look to strengthen ahead of next season.
