Yorick Williams: “I’d like to return to Manchester Giants one day”
The Manchester Giants have today announced their return to the top tier of British Basketball – the first time the club will be in the BBL since their demise in 2001.
Former Giant and current Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Rider, Yorick Williams, spoke exclusively to www.ukamericansportsfans.com about his first professional club and what it means to the city of Manchester to have a team back in the BBL.
“It’s good that they’ve got a major league player back into the top flight of basketball. They’ve been out for a long time,” said the Moss side raised shooting guard. “The fact that I know the people who are holding up the organisation is pretty cool. They’re a good group of people.”
Williams, who played for the Giants during the ’94, ’95 and ’96 seasons, talked about the need for the Manchester Franchise in it’s first few years, to assemble a team that has continuity. It’s something the 17 year veteran feels the Giants have the potential to do.
“If you look at most new teams that come in; Durham had a tough year but they’ll learn from that and come back stronger. And the same in Manchester,
“With Manchester, there are so many players from Manchester playing in the BBL already that already know each. I think they’ll have an easier ride because they’ll know what to expect from this league.”
The 36 year old Williams indicated that although he has no immediate plans to play for the team he began his career with, it’s something he wouldn’t rule it out before he calls time on his incredible career:
“I’ve got to talk to Leicester for next season,” Williams said. “I’ve not talked to Manchester yet. I’ve talked in passing, nothing serious. I’d like to give it another shot elsewhere before I come back to Manchester.”
